POPSUGAR Must Have Unboxing and Review: May 2013

It’s time to review my POPSUGAR MustHave May box! Being my most expensive monthly subscription, I always expect a lot from it, and this month they didn’t disappoint. We received a very nice selection of beauty, fashion, lifestyle and food products and even a gift card to an online jewelry store I’ve never heard of.

beautyblender Travel Kit
I’ve been dying to try beautyblender for so long, and I just had a feeling that I shouldn’t buy it just yet. So glad to have finally gotten it in one of my subscriptions! There were many lucky ladies who got these in their Birchboxes in the past, but alas I wasn’t one of them. From what I’ve heard, the knock-offs you can find at your local drugstore or TJ Maxx don’t even come close to the real thing. Actually I considered buying one of those because I assumed they’re pretty much the same thing. I prefer to apply my foundations and BB creams with a flat top brush, and I haven’t used a sponge for that since high school. Now I’m curious, why this little teardrop shaped thingie is all the rage these days. Turns out it actually feels very different from the oldschool sponges I used to have, it spreads the foundation really well for an even and streak-less finish. The sponge came together with a special cleanser liquid, but I found that a simple bar of soap is actually more effective.

The Modern Cocktail Modern Margarita Set
An interesting and fun concept, I’m really excited to check these out when I’m alone or entertaining. I have not used these yet but I can see how they would be really convenient to quickly put together a few cocktails if you have sudden company.

Mindy Kaling Questions I Ask When I Want to Talk About Myself Conversation Cards
I heard that these cards are based on Mindy’s book. I wouldn’t call myself a die-hard fan of hers but I liked watching The Office so I always feel some sort of connection to everything associated with its main actors. Although this is definitely not something I’d buy, the cards will be fun to play with, and I’m sure they’ll provide plenty of awkward conversation starters.

Pacifica Color Quench Lip Tint
Pacifica is everywhere this month, and I couldn’t be happier! I even ordered two Ipsy bags for a chance to have more of it. This tinted lip balm smells divine, I almost want to eat it – that’s how good it smells. I have a gazillion lip products but gifting this little treasure never even crossed my mind. It’s luxuriously moisturizing and provides a lovely tint to the lips for a nice casual daytime look.

Kooringal Giselle Mid Brim Hat
I’ve been checking out my local TJ Maxx for a nice wide brimmed hat for the summer, and now I don’t have to anymore. Giselle hat is nice and sturdy, equipped with a wire inside so you can shape it easily. These come in three different varieties, but mine was a universal black which I plan to wear at the beach.

Way Better Snacks Sweet Potato Chips
These chips are all-natural, unprocessed, vegan, kosher and more importantly delicious. Some people found them to have weird aftertaste, but I actually quite enjoyed it. They actually didn’t taste much like sweet potatoes to me.

Charm & Chain $30.00 Gift Card
I have never heard of this website before, but the moment I opened it, I was amazed at the fantastic selection of absolutely gorgeous pieces. Everything just looked so classy and high quality, I knew I had to get something. Anything! Most of the cheap things are already sold out, but the card is valid until the end of the year so I will keep checking to see if I like something 🙂

[Extra] Popsugar Tote
This was thrown in as a little extra in the box. I don’t really have a use for it, other than converting it into my reusable grocery bag. However, I already have a ton of those, and they look much cuter, too, so this one will probably just sit in the shoe locker with a pair of leather pumps inside of it.

Box retail value: $113.44

The verdict: I thought that POPSUGAR redeemed themselves this month by sending us this amazing selection of summer essentials. I will enjoy wearing my new hat, playing with the tinted lip balm and starting funny conversations using those cards 🙂
