Stitch Fix Unboxing and Review: November 2013

Purchased by Me affiliate links

Last month I received a $20 gift card to Stitch Fix in my POPSUGAR MustHave box, so I decided that it would be a pretty fun service to try, and scheduled a delivery for the middle of November. I rarely buy clothes online because I prefer to try things on before I buy, and Stitch Fix lets you do just that.

HOW IT WORKS
In a nutshell, Stitch Fix is a personal shopper service: for a $20 styling fee a specially designated Stitch Fix stylist will put together a package full of fashionable items, all according to your style profile. This fee will be applied as a credit toward anything you keep from your shipment, and if you choose to keep it all, you will get an extra 25% discount. After you get the box, it’s very simple: try it on, keep what you like, and send back everything you don’t want within 3 days in a convenient prepaid envelope. You can choose either to get a one-time fix, or to subscribe on a monthly basis. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

With my first fix I went super conservative and very safe, because I was afraid that I won’t like anything they send me, and this way I would probably like at least one item. In my introductory fix I received five items: three tops, a pair of pants and a very lovely scarf.

The first item I tried on was a pair of Kut From The Kloth Jonathan Corduroy Skinny Pants ($78 ARV) in plum color. I usually wear size 6 on the bottom, but I guess this brand runs a bit large so they didn’t fit me all that well, and made me look 3 sizes bigger than I am. I must admit, I really liked the feel of the fabric – it was soft, stretchy and comfortable to move around in. Unfortunately, Stitch Fix is not designed to exchange items for a different size, so I will be returning this pair.

The next three items were various tops. First one I tried on was Shawna Striped Pullover by Red 23 ($28 ARV), and I wasn’t very thrilled with it. The material felt very soft and comfy, but I just didn’t feel like this piece was all that special and must-have worthy. Sure, it looked okay, and it fit me well, but just because something fits is not a reason enough for me to buy it. I thought this pullover was boring, but to be fair, the stylists sent me exactly what I asked for [remember, I tried to be super safe?]. Without any second thoughts, I immediately decided to send this one back.

Next top – Sparrow Tie Front Top by Red 23 ($28 ARV) – looked fabulous in the styling pictures, but when I put it on it just didn’t feel right. It felt too tight in the arms, and I normally don’t like that with long-sleeved shirts. I also have an issue with my long torso and short legs: wrong clothes make me look even shorter, which is exactly what happened with this top. And the last issue is the tie, it landed right in front of my crotch area making it look weird from the front AND the back. As you might have guessed, I’m sending this one back.

Last top is a super comfy Dalton Mixed-Material Button-Up Shirt from Mystree ($38 ARV), and I actually felt that it was the most “me”. Yes, it looks super boring, but I loved it for the quality of the materials used, the non-snug sleeves which were just the right length, and it was thin yet I felt warm and cozy. The only reason I talked myself out of keeping it is the hand wash requirement, because I would want to wear it pretty often.

Last item was this beautiful and bright Henry Birds on Branch Infinity Scarf by Rikka ($28 ARV) and I fell in love with it right away! The colors are perfect for fall, and I love birds, so keeping this one was a no-brainer.

THE VERDICT
As you can see, I only kept one item out of five, but I absolutely loved it and I regret nothing 🙂 I had so much fun with my first Stitch Fix that I decided to change my style profile to reflect a more adventurous side of me. Can’t wait to see what the stylists pick for me next time!

P.S.: Sorry, guys, I know I’m terrible at selfies, and my camera weighs like a million lbs!
