Love With Food Review: March 2013

I have a confession to make: I actually forgot to review my February box! I only realized that when I was nearly done pigging it down, but at that point there was almost nothing left to take pictures of. I must say that their February box was really awesome, and it was probably the best one they sent out to date.

Now, this post is about the March box, and the theme is “Classics with a Twist”.

At this point I’m not subscribed to Love With Food, instead I prefer to take advantage of various discount codes and free month offers, because honestly I never thought that this subscription is worth $12 for a few bite-sized snacks. The only thing that makes me feel bad about thinking that way is the fact that they donate a meal for every box sent, so it’s like me saying I think a $12 donation to feed a hungry child is too much. I hope you understand that this wasn’t my intention at all, and even though I don’t like a lot of things they send, I’m still constantly looking for codes, so that I can keep contributing for the greater good.

Emily’s Chocolates Dark Chocolate Orange Good Fortune Cookie
I’m not a huge fan of fortune cookies, they pretty much taste like cardboard to me. Well, this was an orange flavored, chocolate-covered piece of cardboard. My fortune said “You will make a name for yourself”, I hope it doesn’t mean I’ll suddenly get popular because I don’t deal well with fame. Now why don’t I ever get good money fortunes, it’s like they know that I would spend everything down to the last cent on beauty products! Not fair!

Ola! Foods No Nut Vanilla Vegan Granola
I made sort of a parfait with this granola by layering it with fruit jam and greek yogurt and the result was pretty yummy. I’m the most boring person ever when it comes to the food I like, so of course I appreciated the rich vanilla flavor. Would I buy it? Probably not, but it was certainly nice to try.

Chocowasabi Chocolate Covered Wasabi Peas
Now that I read the description, they do kind of taste like malted milk balls. Either way, this snack was surprisingly good, I definitely didn’t expect this crazy flavor combination to be so delicious. But they say everything tastes better with chocolate… or was it bacon? Apparently Vosges makes the best bacon chocolate, so I kinda feel like I have to try it one of these days. Oops, I got sidetracked again! If you like both wasabi and chocolate then you will most likely love this crazy concoction. Each ball is nice and crunchy and not spicy at all, with rich chocolate coating and just a hint of wasabi flavor.

Kids 50 Fruit & Veggie Juice Drink in Break It Down Berry
Kids 50 Yo Gabba Gabba juice is the first stevia-based healthy drink for kids. I like the fact that it’s healthy, but the taste left me thinking that something’s missing. It wasn’t bad or anything like that, but it just felt like watered down V8, if that makes any sense. I think it’s a great alternative to pop and I hope more of these will find their ways into children’s school lunches.

Cosmos Creations Salted Caramel Baked Corn
This crunchy salted corn has a little bit of every taste, but I thought it was a bit too salty for me. Then again, everyone’s taste buds are different and whatever I find over-the-top someone else might consider bland, and vice versa — after all, I’m a girl that loves the flavor of plain boiled chicken breast. My favorite part about this corn was its crunchiness and the subtle hint of caramel.

Revolution Tea Acai Berry Green Tea Infuser
This has to be the tiniest and cutest little boxed tea bag I’ve ever seen! I’m not a fan of acai berry flavor in general, but I know how crazy healthy it is so I mixed my tea with a load of honey and sipped it down knowing that I just charged myself with a solid load of antioxidants. Now I’m curious to try their other tea varieties as well.

Mary’s Gone Crackers Original Seed Crackers
Not only these yummy crackers are wheat- and gluten-free, they’re loaded with Omega-3 fatty acids which makes them extra healthy. They are also super crunchy! The thing I dislike the most about very crunchy snacks is that they get crumbs all over the place, well, not these crackers. They break down into nice big pieces while providing that delightful loud crunch, and they’re also bursting with flavor. This has to be my favorite product in this month’s box!

Wacky Apple Wild Berry Flat Fruit
It was hard to eat these flat fruit bars without making a sticky mess, or maybe I’m just a piggie, but I really liked the flavor and the consistency. It reminded me of that natural candy for babies made from compressed fruit puree. I’m pretty sure that’s what this thing is anyway. Flat Fruit bars are perfectly snack-sized, thin enough to fit in small purses, and sweet enough to satisfy the sudden midday food cravings.

  • The best: Two products stand out: the Revolution tea and Mary’s Gone Crackers, but I’d have to say I liked the crackers a bit more. However, I think I will end up purchasing both of these products in the future.
  • The worst: The food opinions are so subjective, which is why it sounds silly to pick the worst things. The product I liked the least would be the chocolate-coated cardboard fortune cookie. That’s just my personal opinion anyway, I’m sure it has its devoted fans who think it’s delicious.

The verdict: Unlike beauty subscriptions, the food boxes almost never pay off, but at least Love With Food makes you feel good about yourself. March was an “okay” month for me because I found a few things I like, and I will probably get more of that Revolution tea in different varieties.

Are you a Love With Food subscriber? What do you think of this month’s box?
